How can I access the library electronic resources from off-campus? |
| |
The library electronic resources – databases, journals, books and reprints are available for Tel Aviv University community only. To access the library electronic resources (from home, abroad) you have to configure the university PROXY in your browser. The university PROXY will enable access to the Library resources following identification.
The username and password for the university e-mail are also used to access the library electronic resources.
The user must identify himself by a username and password
For info about the username see computer account.
Undergraduate students can access the library electronic resources only if they are connected to the Internet via a commercial Internet provider. Instructions on PROXY configuration is in the website of the Computation Center Help Desk.
Graduate students and University staff can access the library electronic resources either via a commercial Internet provider or via the University network for a fee.

Students of the School of Continuing Medical Education (CME) - To get a username and password one should contact Ronit in the school Office, phone – 6409797.
University Faculty and staff - To get a username and password one should contact the Computer Coordinator of his Faculty.

May be the problem is caused by one of the library electronic resources (e-journal, e-book, database), which you tried to access. You have to contact the Reference Desk, Tel: 03-6407975, or e-mail: medlibl@tauex.tau.ac.il.

If a student has forgotten his password, he can confirm a new
password while using his 4 digit code as his current password.

What are the advantages of e-mail ? |

All messages from the University units and from the Circulation Dept. in the library are sent to your e-mail; e.g., messages about password change or messages about book requests.

How to forward e-mail? |
| |
Incoming Students
If the student wishes to forward his e-mail to a different e-mail address, he should do it according to Google's rules.
Ongoing Students
A student that wishes to read his mail in a different e-mail address (other then TAU's), can forward his e-mail by using:
Forward Mail Tools .
To use the above tools, the student must know his computer account (username and password).

How do I access electronic journals via the library homepage? |
| |
It is possible to access electronic journals via one of the following
possibilities:
A. Through the list of electronic journals on the library homepage:
- Select “Electronic Resources” and click on “E-journals”
- Click on “E-Journals – Health Sciences and Life Sciences”
- Select the first letter of the journal title
- Find the journal by alphabetical order
Another possibility through the list of electronic journals – to fill in
words from the journal title in the search box on top of the screen.
B. Electronic journals are also available via:
ULE – The Israeli Union List of E-Journals
ULE is accessible through the library homepage:
- Choose “Library Catalogs” and click on “ULE”.ss
C. Electronic journals are also accessible via the library catalog on the library homepage:
- Choose “Library Catalogs” and click on “Our Library Catalog”
- Click on “English”
- Select from the “Search Options” box “Journal Title starting with…”
and write in the empty search box the full journal title. Click on “Go”
- Click on the required journal title on the list
- Click on the link to the journal website

Electronic journals sometimes have access problems:
Due to the journal /publisher website maintenance.
At the end of subscription year and at renewal of subscriptions (on January and February) there might be access problems.

When an electronic journal requires a password click on "password required" on the right side of
the title line in the e-journals list.
- When searching the library catalog click on "Check Years of Full Text" and in the resulting
screen click on pw

What is the purpose of the link “Printed Format” which is located next to some of the journal titles in the e-journals list? |

The link “Printed Version” shows that the library has a printed version of the journal as well. The link is directed to the library holdings concerning this journal.
Important: Mostly, the library holding of the journal in a printed version is different from the electronic version. Therefore, if you miss the required year in the electronic version, it is suggested that you’ll check the printed version.

- In PubMed click on "Journals in NCBI databases" on the right side of the screen
- Then write the abbreviated title in the search box

You’ll get information on the journal holdings (print, electronic or both versions).

For information on journals in Israeli libraries check the
ULS – The Israel Union List of Serials
To get the full name, address and phone number of each library
click on “Library Codes” on top of the screen.
ULS is also available via the library homepage: Choose

How can I obtain journal articles that are unavailable in the library? |

Faculty and staff members, students and non-university users
may order photocopies of journal articles from off-campus
libraries (from Israel and overseas) by the Interlending and
Document Supply Center.
If you order via an On-line Request Form, or via an internal mail
you have to deposit a sum of money in advance, or to perform a
budget transfer.
Faculty and staff members may fill in an order form in the
Department (room no. 12) and pay upon ordering via a credit
card or a photocopying card.
The user may receive the copies of articles directly to his e-mail,
by mail or in the Department.

Is it possible to order copies of articles from journals that are available in the library collection? |

Yes. It is possible to order copies of journal articles, which are

How do I access electronic books from the library homepage? |

Through the library homepage.
A. Through the library catalog:
- Select “Library Catalogs” and click on “Our Library Catalog”
- Click on “English”
- Click on “Library Catalog”
- Click on “Advanced Search” on top of the screen
- Select one of the possibilities in the “Search Options” box and write the
search words
- Select “E-Books” in the “Material Type” box. Click on “Go”
B. It is also possible to access the electronic books by browsing
the alphabetical list by e-book title:
- From the library homepage select “Electronic Resources” and click on “E-Books”
Important:
Some electronic books require a first-time registration for creating a username and password that you’ll have to remember in the future (e.g., books from MDCONSULT).

- Click on “English”. Then click on “Library catalog”
Select one of the possibilities from the “Search Options” box
- Write the Search Words

Here you get the book location, collection codes and circulation

Where can I find information on books in Israeli libraries? |

For information on books in other libraries in Israel check the
ULI – The Israel Union Catalog.

How do I renew books? |
| |
Book loans are automatically renewed.
If the book is requested by another reader, you’ll get an e-mail
message, telling you the last due date of the book.
It is also possible to renew the loan through the library
homepage:
Select “Library Catalogs” and click on “Loan Renewal”
Select one of the written possibilities.

How can I request a book that is on loan? |
| |
It is possible to request a book only when all its copies are
on loan (except for the overnight/weekend copy in the
textbooks collection).
The book request is possible via the Location & Copies screen:
from the library homepage:
- Choose “Library Catalogs” and click on “Our Library Catalog”
- Click on “English”
- Select one of the possibilities in the “Search Options” box,
write
the search words and click on “Go”
- Click on the requested item in the list
- Click on the link “Life Sciences and Medicine”
- Click on “Request” next to one of the copies
- Fill in the details and click on “Order”
It is important to see the remark: “Your request has been
registered”.

How can I get help for locating scientific literature on a specific subject? |
| |
The Reference librarians assist university staff and students in
locating library and other scientific resources:
catalogs, databases and Internet resources.
The reference Desk is available:
Sun. – Thurs. 8.30 a.m. – 6.45 p.m.
The Reference librarians will also answer queries by phone:

Computerized Information Unit:
Scientific articles and other information are searched by the
Computerized Information Unit staff, according to customer needs and
demands. Consultation and help on information resources and searching

How can I import references from PubMed website to Endnote? |
| |
1. Execute your searches in PubMed to obtain search results.
Select "Clipboard" from the "Send to" drop down in the PubMed navigation bar to save records from multiple searches as you work.
2. On the search results page, select "MEDLINE" in the Display dropdown menu in the PubMed navigation bar, which is set to Summary by default.
3. Choose "File" from the "Send to" drop down menu in the PubMed navigation bar to save the text file containing your selected references.
If you have a popup blocker enabled, such as the one that comes by default from Windows XP Service Pack 2, you may need to disable the popup blocker temporarily to allow the PubMed website to send you the file.
4. Click on the Save button to save your selected references
5. In EndNote, open the folder where you would like these references saved.
6. Under the File menu select "Import".
